Spaceship of the Imagination

Spaceship of the Imagination

I built this recently for the Atlanta Star Party to auction off for their charity.

It’s an 18″ (plus stand) replica of the Spaceship of the Imagination from the new Cosmos series.

I first built up two sections using foamcore as a base (with a hole left for the sphere). On top of this I slathered quite a lot of Bondo. There followed a lot of sanding. Once I had the two sections shaped — the front and back being different — I put them together and, you guessed it, more Bondo to smooth the edges. I then primed and painted and painted. The chromed sphere was added and then a laser-cut plaque added to hold it in (and, provide a plaque, of course).

It was ultimately won at auction by sci-fi author Scott Sigler.
